I read law and journalism at the University of Hamburg (Germany) and acquired professional qualification for practicing law in Germany (Große Juristische Staatsprüfung, OLG). All degrees were awarded with distinction (December 1988.)
From 1990 to 1993 I advised German state governments in Berlin and Hessen drafting the states' anti-discrimination legislation inter alia.
I received my PhD from the University of Hamburg in 1992 and my Habilitation (venia legend European and German civil and labour law) from the University of Bremen in 1999. Prior to coming to Leeds, I have held the positions of lecturer (Hamburg, 8 months between 1989-1990), assistant professor (Bremen, 1993-99); Jean Monnet Professor in Law (Oldenburg, 2000 - 2007); and Director of Hanse Law School (Oldenburg/Bremen/Groningen 2002-2007).
I am a member of the journal advisory boards of the Maastricht Journal of Comparative and European Law, and Kritische Justiz (Critical Legal Studies, Germany) and an individual member of the IUS COMMUNE research school (specialising in comparative and European law), and teach at regular intervals at the European Academy of Law (Trier).

Scholarly and Research Interests
My main research interests are European and International Equality law, the interrelation of Economic and Social Integration in the EU and beyond and, judicial ideologies and social ideals, in particular of the European Court of Justice.
My next monograph entitled "Economic and Social Integration - the Challenge for EU Constitutional Law" (Edward Elgar 2012) will be in print in May 2012.
Teaching
I currently teach European Union Law (as module leader) and discrimination law for undergraduates. As director of the LL.M programme EU law, I teach EU Social Law, EU Discrimination Law, Transnational Economic Relations and Private Lawmaking and Dissertation in EU Law.

I am happy to supervise PhD research in my fields of interest specified above, and also to discuss development of themes for PhD research individually.

I am happy to give interviews and background talks on equality law and on tension between EU economic and social integration (e.g. topical issues such as the influx of labour from other EU Member States, hospital treatment in other EU countries or perceived clashes between the right to strike and EU economic freedoms).
