I have worked in Higher Education for over sixteen years.

I am a qualified Solicitor with twelve years post-qualification experience. In addition, I have three years experience in a niche planning consultancy, specialising in listed buildings and conservation areas.

I have a special interest in developing student skills, and am the School's Careers Advisor.

Scholarly and Research Interests

I am interested in environmental law: pollution control, planning law (including the built heritage) and nature conservation.

Mr research interests also involve torts, corporate manslaughter, emergency planning/disasters, and  risk and legal processes.

I was a partner in an ESRC funded project entitled 'Perception and Communication of Terrorist Risk' (2008) and a project called 'Cyclops' (Cycling of Phosphorous in the Eastern Mediterranean), an EU funded (1.9m euro), seven-partner marine science project (with legal aspect), running from 1999 to 2003.

Teaching

I am the module co-ordinator for all Torts modules and Environmental modules.

This includes Pollution Control at undergraduate and postgraduate level, planning and nature conservation at undergraduate level, and European environmental law at postgraduate level.

I was runner up in the Law Teacher of the Year competition 2007-2008.

My environmental law modules (open to law and non-law students) have a practical focus, mirrored in the 'real life' problem-based assessment tasks.

PhD Supervision

I am currently supervising a PhD which concerns environmental disputes in a WTO context.

I am interested in receiving applications which correspond to my research interests.
