Europeanisation and European Integration Theory and Legal Research Projects

31 October 2012 | 4.00pm to 8.00pm | Seminar
School of Law, The Liberty Building, University of Leeds

This seminar gives an overview of the interdisciplinary character of European studies and then focuses on political science approaches to European integration and Europeanisation.

Dr. Simon Lightfoot will discuss how political science uses the concept of Europeanisation. He will utilise research findings from his project on EU international development policy and new Member States from Central and Eastern Europe. In particular, he will identify the benefits of using integration theories even in more empirically based research.

Dr. Jen Hendry will discuss what the concept of Europeanisation offers in terms of legal analysis, with specific focus on the idea of the Europeanisation of law within the European Union. She will engage with the 'considerable conceptual contestation' regarding Europeanisation and highlight the differences between the political-scientific use of the term and legal-theoretical approaches. The presentation will distinguish Europeanisation from comparable terms such as integration and harmonisation within an EU context.
