Disability Equality and Human Rights in the Criminal Justice System: Implications for Policing and Prosecuting

Organised and supported by the Centre for Disability Studies (CDS), the School of Law’s Centre for Criminal Justice Studies (CCJS) and Law & Social Justice Research Group (L&SJ), and Care-Connect. This one-day conference aims to facilitate collaboration and knowledge exchange between individuals and organisations working to enhance equality and human rights for disabled people, including those who have, or are diagnosed as having, mental health conditions, in the context of police and prosecution services and systems.

Chair and speakers include Lord Colin Low, Oliver Lewis, Mental Disability Advocacy Centre, Martin Goldman, Chief Crown Prosecutor for Yorkshire and Humberside, Stephen Brookes MBE, Disability Hate Crime Network, Professor Anna Lawson (CDS and S&SJ, University of Leeds), Professor Alan Roulstone (CDS, University of Leeds), Professor Louise Ellison (CCJS, University of Leeds), Tim McSharry, Access Committee for Leeds, Dr Susie Balderston, Lancaster University, Dr Lucy Series, Cardiff Law School and Glyn Thomas, NHS England.

The conference will bring together:

– Disabled people.
– People working in organisations representing disabled people.
– People working in fields of policy and law reform.
– People working in relevant professional capacities, including police, legal professionals, social services, third sector and community groups.
– People carrying out relevant research, from different academic disciplines.

Police and prosecutor treatment of cases involving disabled victims, including victims of hate crime will be addressed in the morning. Police and prosecutor treatment of cases involving disabled suspects and offenders will be tackled in the afternoon.
