Studying ideology and strategies of the jihadi movement

21 January 2015 | 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm | Seminar

This event is jointly sponsored by the Security and Justice Research Group and the Centre for Criminal Justice Studies.

As recent events so powerfully illustrate the prevention of violent extremism is a critical challenge for societies across the globe. Indeed, the risk posed by ‘radicalization’ arguably poses one of the most serious and inter-connected contemporary security challenges at local, regional, national and international levels. Correspondingly, Governmental and policing responses to these challenges also raise fundamental questions concerning their effectiveness and impact upon the rights and freedoms that characterise democratic political systems. The prevention of radicalization and political extremism is therefore a critical challenge that requires suitable analysis and theory to guide effective policy and policing responses. To enable discussion of these critically important and salient issues the Security and Justice Research Group is hosting a seminar on ‘Radicalisation and Political Violence’.

To aid the discussion, and marking the beginning of his two-year Marie Curie Fellowship in the School of Law, Dr Andreas Armborst will provide a brief presentation entitled ‘Studying ideology and strategies of the jihadi movement’. Reflecting the inter-disciplinary dialogue within the Group, this opening presentation will then be discussed by Dr Lars Berger, Associate Professor in International Security in the School of Politics and International Relations before opening up discussion to the floor.

The event will be hosted by Professor Adam Crawford between 4 pm and 6 pm on Wednesday 21st January in the seminar room of Beech Grove House and will be followed by drinks. The event is open to all but does require registration.
