Living in Leeds

Leeds is a cosmopolitan city that packs the vibrant feel and choice of a metropolis into the compact geography of a town. People are friendly and open-minded, and the city itself is ethnically diverse, with good facilities for all different types of cultural and religious needs.

The city is famous in the UK as a major shopping destination and centre for entertainment, nightlife, the arts and leisure. Leeds boasts over two miles of traffic free shopping, and beautiful Victorian and Edwardian arcades, markets and halls that sell a plethora of goods: from fresh, good value food to designer luxury handbags.

The city also offers an extensive choice of places to eat and drink to suit all culinary tastes and budgets, and the nightlife in and around the city is known for its diversity and popularity.

Musically, Leeds offers a huge variety that is hard to beat. There are lots of live music venues in the city including the open air venue at Millennium Square and the Refectory next to the Students' Union building where some of the UK's most popular bands regularly perform.

The city has a vibrant cultural life, so whether you are a fan of cinema, opera, concerts or theatre, Leeds has something to suit you. The University is part of an arts network offering an extensive programme of exhibitions, recitals, concerts and theatre all year round. The University Gallery has a comprehensive exhibition programme as well as a nationally recognised permanent collection.

Leeds is also one of the greenest cities in Britain with more parkland than any other European city. In Leeds or nearby, you will find many fascinating places to visit that are ideal locations for a great day out: such as Roundhay Park, Temple Newsam, Harewood House, Tropical World and Kirkstall Abbey. Leave the city and within thirty minutes, you will find yourself in open countryside.

Leeds is also within easy reach of the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District, the Lake District and historic towns such as York, Harrogate, and Ripon.
