On leaving school, I completed an Advanced Modern Apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering. Qualifying as an engineer, I decided to change direction in my career. I joined the police and went to university to study Criminology and Psychology.
On completion of my undergraduate degree, I came to University of Leeds to study MA Criminological Research. Following the MA at Leeds, I was a lecturer at Leeds Metropolitan University and University of York.
I left the lecturing posts, and the police, to pursue a fully funded PhD at the University of Cambridge, which I am currently completing. During my time at Cambridge, I have taught in Cambridge, Oxford, London, Paris, and San Francisco. Furthermore, I have spent time working with the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department.
My motivation to study MA Criminological Research
When looking for my Masters course, I was looking for a something that matched my desire to conduct empirical research, whilst also getting an advance on the taught content I had received at undergraduate level; unlike other universities, the MA at Leeds provided exactly that.
My time at Leeds
I loved my time at the University of Leeds. The course was exceptional, and the staff friendly and supportive. The most enjoyable part was meeting such a diverse and interesting group of people on the course, who have become great friends.
The course provided a great range of skills and topics, especially external links for doing empirical research. The skills I learned and developed in my time at Leeds have been fundamental in guiding the career path I have followed since.
If you want to develop your knowledge, skills and potential, receive exceptional teaching from dedicated staff, whilst maintaining a great social life, this course, and the University of Leeds is definitely for you.
The University of Leeds provides the whole package: exceptional teaching and learning, one of the best social scenes in the UK, and ultimately the chance to meet a diverse group of students who come from all corners of the globe. As a student city, Leeds is without doubt one of the best in the UK, and something I will never forget.
Leeds is by far the best city I have spent time as a student (and I am at my seventh UK city now!). There is no shortage of things to do, sport, entertainment, nightlife, national heritage, and the scenery in and around Leeds is some of the best in the UK. It is also very easy to make friends in Leeds, there are so many students in the same position as you, it is amazing!
After graduating, I went on to be a lecturer at Leeds Metropolitan University and University of York. I am now completing a fully funded PhD at the University of Cambridge, which is directly building on my MA Criminological Research work, and also co-founding a social enterprise, a coaching programme for young people in custody. The course at Leeds was a critical part in obtaining and developing each of these roles.
In the future, I hope to develop this social enterprise I am co-founding, and expand throughout the UK, and internationally.
