I am from Leeds originally, but spent time living in Europe before commencing university. I have trained for the past four years in martial arts and I am currently training for my black belt.
Why I Chose Law at Leeds
Leeds is the biggest financial and legal centre outside London and home to one of the top Law Schools in the UK so it was an easy for choice for me to make. My passion is businesses, how they run and the law underpins and facilitates business transactions. I originally wanted to be a stockbroker but became attracted to law because it offers a rigorous academic challenge but is also interesting with real world applications- from mergers to hiring employees the law is at the heart of the matter.
The lecturers are world class and clearly love their subjects. The courses are accessible and if you need any extra help the lecturers are more than happy to help. I have thoroughly enjoyed criminal and company law. This year I am looking forward to learning more about commercial law and getting to grips with the philosophy of law in jurisprudence.
The Learning Facilities and School Support
The learning facilities are excellent and the university is always reinvesting to keep the facilities up to date. The new undergraduate Laidlaw library will be completed next year (2015).The Brotherton and Edward Boyle libraries are great and there are now more books online so I can access them from home, which is very useful. The virtual learning environment allows you to keep up to date with all the work and hand-outs from lectures. The Liberty Building- home to the School of Law- is modern building and is a fantastic place to study and socialise.
The level of support in the School is excellent, there is always someone to get the advice and help you may need whether that's your personal tutor or a member of the dedicated support staff.
Outside of studying
The employability and careers events are brilliant opportunities to network and build links with the top law firms. The School of Law hosts it's own event each year whilst the Careers Service have events all year round. The School organise negotiating and mooting competitions which are always fun to be involved with and a great way of meeting new people. The Law Society at Leeds is second-to-none and is always putting on great events and socials throughout the year.
Life in Leeds
Leeds is a dynamic and vibrant city, constantly moving forward. Home to international banks and law firms the university sits in the heart of a cutting edge city. Leeds is known for its shopping, bars and restaurants so there is always something new to try or places to go. The Trinity Centre shopping complex is an impressive addition to the city.
My advice to prospective students
Apply for Law at Leeds! The course combines world-class reputation with an employability focus as well as a vibrant social scene for the best experience of your life.
I have secured a training contract with a top UK commercial law firm commencing in 2016. I also founded mylawpath.com to offer relevant articles, key hints and focused tips to help other law students actualise their potential and succeed in the law, this is something I hope to continue with.
