Understanding assaults on police officers - An ethnography of violence against police officers

My PhD explores the social context in which assaults on police officers occur. In so doing it will consider the role of 'victim precipitation' and whether officers themselves, either directly or indirectly, may play a role in their own victimisation.

The research will aim to consider the demographics of officers who are or have been assaulted to determine if there are any factors which increase the risk of assault. The social contexts and the different arenas in which assaults occur will also be considered. The research will also investigate officer reactions to being assaulted and whether their risk management strategies, which they employ at incidents, differs as a result.

This will be done through drawing upon existing primary research as well as fieldwork within a police force with current serving police officers.
