The implementation of the UN CRPD by the European Member States. How national policies can be influenced by the European Union.
Implementing the UN CRPD, European Member States have to take into account different pressures. These can be internal, as local culture or movements, and external, as the CRPD’s Committee, EU policies and international DPOs.
The research intends to identify the networks in which European Member States are involved with regard to the implementation of the CRPD. It aims to show how European Member States welcome conditionings and when governments are more or less open to accept stresses from third parties. It is going to emphasize the difference between government and governance from a general perspective to the specific opportunities offered by the CRPD. The result should highlight a path that connects the rights contained within the CRPD to European citizens within a relationship which is able to work in both the directions.
I concluded my Master at the University of Siena in July 2016.
The title of my thesis was “Persons with disabilities: from a medical definition to a human rights priority against discrimination; perspectives of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; new angles for a different approach.”
My MA degree in International Sciences has touched different macro areas from international economy to sociology, from history of colonialism to human rights, from international relations to international organisations.
My BA in Social Sciences for Cooperation and Development had a focus on the impact of international policies at the local level. I was particularly interested in anthropology, sociology of groups, statistics & research, and local governance.
What motivated me to undertake PhD study?
I don’t want to wait for a future developed without my contribution. People create businesses, others destroy them. I only want to suggest ways to conduct both these actions in peace and for the wellbeing of everybody.
What makes me passionate about my subject?
My approach to the UN CRPD has been casual. What I like of this Convention is its approach to equality and the impact that this can have on democracy in general. The treaty was written to protect persons with disabilities but it can have a more wide impact.
