Profile

I have been at the University of Leeds since September 2001 after studying for my Ph.D at the University of Nottingham and before that a Masters in International Law and an undergraduate degree from Queen Mary College, University of London. My teaching and research interests are focused on international law and human rights.

In January 2015, I was reappointed to the Law Society's Human Rights Committee for a further three years (2015-18).

I am a former Chair of the Committee on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the School and have been an Academic Lead for Decolonising Education, as well as being part of the University’s Working Group on Decolonising Education. 

I am also an associate editor for the International Journal of Human Rights

Research interests

My primary research interests are in the areas of international law and international human rights law, and have written on the indigenous peoples' rights, legal orientalism and postcolonial perspectives of law, the UN human rights monitoring bodies, and on universal jurisdiction and immunities. I am interested in the role of the international community and the United Nations in developing human rights, its supervisory and monitoring capacities, dispute settlement, the prohibition of torture and international criminal law.

I am currently working on research in relation to the customary laws of adivasi communities in Jharkhand, India and on subaltern studies and international law.

Student education

I teach on and manage the modules: International law and (UG and which is a discovery module) and Global Governance through Law (PGT)

I lecture also on the international human rights law module.

I am currently supervising three students at Ph.D level and encourage applications in the areas of public international law, international human rights and postcolonial studies of international law.
