Dr Chloe Wallace

Profile

I am Associate Professor in Law, specialising in student education. I joined Leeds in 1999, after postgraduate work at the University of Kent, where I obtained my PhD. My academic work focuses on curriculum, pedagogy and assessment, with a focus on changing and developing practice to enable effective, empowering and liberatory learning. I have a particular interest in study abroad, internationalisation, and storytelling, as well as a commitment to the importance of language learning. I seek to listen to the voices of marginalised staff and students and place their needs and experiences at the centre of my practice.

I have led our LLB Law with Languages Programmes for over 20 years, developing substantial practical experience in programme leadership and study abroad. I was a founder member of the Centre for Innovation and Research in Legal Education and have been its  Co-Director, meaning that I act as a mentor to junior colleagues, particularly in education-focused roles. I am currently the School Mitigating Circumstances Lead.

I have been and remain a branch officer of Leeds University UCU.

When not working, you can mostly find me in my garden (planting, digging or reading a good book), out on a walk, or on my travels.

Research interests

My main area of interest is legal education, and in particular legal pedagogy - how we teach and learn about the law. That interest is informed by a broader interest in legal theory, particularly critical legal theory, and in relationships between law and the humanities and law and language.

I am currently researching the pedagogic experience of students on study abroad years:  the impact of different learning environments on what is gained through a study abroad, both in terms of academic learning and the wider experience.

I am also writing on storyworlds, in particular the extent to which the techniques of world building used in fiction can be used to construct curricula and learning and teaching events.

I teach on a range of modules usually including Constitutional and Administrative Law, European Constitutional Law, and European Legal Systems.
