Funding and scholarships for research postgraduates

We regularly offer the following scholarships to research postgraduates.

School of Law Research Scholarship

The School of Law invites applications from prospective postgraduate research students who are wishing to commence study for a PhD in the academic year 2012-13 for the School of Law Research Scholarship.

The School of Law will offer one research scholarship in 2012-13. The award is open to full-time student (UK/EU or International) who have been offered a place on a PhD with the School of Law. The value of the award is equivalent to the cost of Home/EU Rated course fees for 2012-13 plus an annual stipend of £10,000. The award will be renewable annually upon satisfactory academic progress up to a maximum of three years from initial year of registration.

The deadline for applications is the 30 of June 2012, 5.00pm (GMT). Applicants must use the application form provided in addition to the application form for the academic place. The deadline for applications is the 30 June 2012. The successful candidate will be advised in writing within three weeks of 31st July 2012.

The panel determining the award will comprise the Postgraduate Research Tutor and at least two other members of academic staff, among which at least two directors of the school’s research centres.

William Harrison Graduate Research Scholarship

The School invites applications from postgraduate research students who are wishing to commence study in the academic year 2012-13 for the William Harrison Graduate Research Scholarship.

The School of Law will offer two William Harrison Graduate Research Scholarships to two postgraduate research students in 2012-13.  The award is open to full-time students (UK/EU or International) who have been offered a place on a PhD with the School of Law.  The value of the award is equivalent to the cost of Home/EU Rated course fees for 2012-13.

ESRC PhD Studentships

The School of Law sometimes invites applications from prospective PhD students for a full-time or part-time ESRC funded 1+ 3 or +3 quota studentships.  Confirmation is awaited for availability for 2013/2014 entry.

Postgraduate Alumni Scholarships

The School of Law rewards the loyalty of those that have previously graduated from the School and who intend to pursue full-time postgraduate studies in the School.

We offer a 10 per cent reduction in postgraduate tuition fees for all alumni who are self-funding and meet the eligibility criteria set out below.

To be eligible for a scholarship, you must meet the following criteria.

  • You must hold an offer of a place to study and begin your full-time postgraduate taught Masters programme in September 2012, or you must be newly registered for MPhil or PhD degree programmes in the academic year 2012-13.
  • You must be a graduate of the School of Law, University of Leeds, that is you must have qualified on a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree (for example, a LLB, BA, LLM, MA.
  • You must be wholly self-financing for the tuition fee element of your programme.We consider you to be self-financing if ...
  • you are paying all of your tuition fees yourself
  • you have support from a friend or relative
  • or you have sponsorship from a friend or relative.

The Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship takes the form of a tuition fee reduction. The Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship cannot be awarded in addition to the School's International Taught Postgraduate Scholarship, but may be awarded in addition to other scholarships or awards from the University of Leeds.

In such instances, we apply the 10 per cent discount to the net fee that a student would otherwise pay. It is the duty of the student to advise the School of Law if s/he has applied for or has obtained funding for their tuition fees.

You do not need to complete a separate application form, but you must provide the following information to the Postgraduate Admissions Office.

  • Details of your current/previous study at the School of Law.
  • A copy of your previous qualification from the University if you have it available.

Types of funding that disqualify you from the Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship are as follows.

  • If you have a full or partial scholarship for tuition fees from an external source such as a Chevening Scholarship.
  • If you have sponsorship from the following or similar organisations: an organisation such as a UK Research Council; any government body e.g. an embassy; your employer or another company.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships for Research Degree candidates

Opportunities are sometimes available for our research degree students to take up Graduate Teaching Assistantships.
