ESRC Quota PhD Studentship in Socio-Legal Studies and/or Criminology
The School of Law invites applications from prospective PhD students for a full-time or part-time ESRC funded 1+ 3 or +3 quota studentship in socio-legal studies and/or criminology commencing October 2012.
- Applicants for ESRC funded 1+3 awards are expected to have achieved an Upper Second Class honours (2:1) degree in any of the social science subjects including law at undergraduate level or above or to be currently completing the final year.
- Applicants for ESRC funded +3 awards are expected to have degree at Masters level or have equivalent research training experience and a degree in any of the social sciences at undergraduate level or above.
Eligibility
ESRC studentships are open to UK and EU citizens
Maintenance grants for studentships in 2012/13 will be paid at the relevant ESRC rate, (£13,590 for 2011/12).

MA Criminal Justice Studies and Criminology Scholarships
The School of Law is offering merit scholarships to full-time UK/EU and international students of high academic ability studying on one of our five criminal justice related MAs, including MA Criminal Justice Studies; MA Criminal Justice Studies and Policing; MA Criminological Research; MA Criminology; and MA International and Comparative Criminal Justice.
The scholarships are worth £2000 for students commencing study in September 2012.
To be eligible for a scholarship, you must meet one of the following entry criteria:
- A First Class UG degree in a related subject
- An Upper Second UG degree in a related subject (with an average of at least 62% in years 2 & 3) and a mark of 65% or above in the dissertation
- For applicants with at least five years of relevant work experience: an Upper Second UG degree in a related subject
All eligible students will be automatically considered. No application is required. The scholarship will take the form of a tuition fee reduction. Students whose fees are paid by a sponsor are not eligible for this scholarship.
International Taught Postgraduate Scholarships
The School of Law offers scholarships to international students of high academic ability who are nationals of, or are permanently domiciled in, the following countries: India, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam.
The scholarships are worth £500 for students commencing their full-time taught Postgraduate Masters studies in the School in September 2012.
To be eligible for a scholarship,
- you must be a national or permanently domiciled in one of the stated countries.
- you must hold an offer of a place to study and begin your postgraduate taught Masters programme in September 2012
- you must be classified as international/overseas for tuition fee purposes.
All eligible students will be automatically considered. No application is required. The International Taught Postgraduate Scholarship will take the form of a tuition fee reduction. Students whose fees are paid by a sponsor are not eligible for this scholarship. The scholarship will be available on a pro-rata basis for students on dual or split-site Masters programmes.
Postgraduate Alumni Scholarships
The School of Law rewards the loyalty of those that have previously graduated from the School and who intend to pursue full-time postgraduate studies in the School.
We offer a 10 per cent reduction in postgraduate tuition fees for all alumni who are self-funding and meet the eligibility criteria set out below.
To be eligible for a scholarship, you must meet the following criteria.
- You must hold an offer of a place to study and begin your full-time postgraduate taught Masters programme in September 2012, or you must be newly registered for MPhil or PhD degree programmes in the academic year 2009-10.
- You must be a graduate of the School of Law, University of Leeds, that is you must have qualified on a full undergraduate or postgraduate degree (for example, a LLB, BA, LLM, MA.
- You must be wholly self-financing for the tuition fee element of your programme. We consider you to be self-financing if ...
- you are paying all of your tuition fees yourself
- you have support from a friend or relative
- or you have sponsorship from a friend or relative.
The Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship takes the form of a tuition fee reduction. The Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship cannot be awarded in addition to the School's International Taught Postgraduate Scholarship, but may be awarded in addition to other scholarships or awards from the University of Leeds.
In such instances, we apply the 10 per cent discount to the net fee that a student would otherwise pay. It is the duty of the student to advise the School of Law if s/he has applied for or has obtained funding for their tuition fees.
You do not need to complete a separate application form, but you must provide the following information to the Postgraduate Admissions Office.
- Details of your current/previous study at the School of Law.
- A copy of your previous qualification from the University if you have it available.
Types of funding that disqualify you from the Postgraduate Alumni Scholarship are as follows.
- If you have a full or partial scholarship for tuition fees from an external source such as a Chevening Scholarship.
- If you have sponsorship from the following or similar organisations: an organisation such as a UK Research Council; any government body e.g. an embassy; your employer or another company.
