EU Law Summer School
The School of Law runs a new summer course to introduce postgraduate students to EU law, aimed at prospective postgraduate students who have not had the opportunity to study EU law at undergraduate level.
Why study EU law?
The European Union and its law are looked upon from all over the world as offering novel ways of trans-national law and international governance. With a widely accepted principle of "primacy" of its law, the EU has managed to establish an efficient regional entity that maintains diversity between states and people. EU law is part of the law of the land in all EU Member States, and interests business in other regions because of the relevance of trade with the EU. From a more idealistic point of view, the EU and its law fascinate those looking for a model of balancing economic and social aims.
What is special about this course?
We teach this course through "blended learning". This means that we send you a comprehensive study text, along with self study questions and electronic exercises, which enables you to study EU law in your own time and alongside other commitments.
Then, during your four-week stay in Leeds, you work on a topic chosen by yourself, on which you write a paper and deliver a presentation. You then take a written exam based on your online and paper studies. When you complete the course successfully, you will have a sound grounding in EU law.
Who should study this course?
- If you wish to enrol in the LLM EU Law but did not have the opportunity to study EU law
during your undergraduate studies, this summer school is perfect for you.
- LLM Law presupposes knowledge in EU law. If you have a degree in a different discipline or a law degree from a non-EU Member State, you can satisfy this programme condition by successfully participating in this summer course.
- If you are coming to Leeds for another
law programme and want to gain knowledge in EU law while they are in the EU, this summer school is a programme for you.
- If you are coming from outside the EU, why not making the most of your studies and being able to demonstrate that you also acquired EU law proficiency? With basic knowledge in EU law as acquired by this summer course, you can take all our postgraduate EU law modules, and develop an EU law profile alongside your other degree. If you cannot demonstrate the basic knowledge in EU law from your home degree, this course is an opportunity to gain access to all modules.
- If you come from a different
discipline or culture and wish to become accustomed to law-specific
requirements in studying, language
and assessment before you start your postgraduate course, then this course is a great opportunity.
- If you feel a little insecure how to succeed in an unfamiliar environment, this course is an ideal way to get acquainted with methods of assessment and studying for postgraduate taught courses, besides introducing you to a fascinating subject.

The course fees are £750. For this amount, you receive the following.
