The Confiscation of Criminal Assets: Policy, Practice and Research

Follow-the-money approaches are increasingly being adopted to supplement perceived inadequacies in the conventional criminal process. In the face of increasing threats from corruption, organised crime and terrorist activities, the financial assets of suspected and convicted criminals and terrorists are put in the front line of the state's response. While this approach is intuitively appealing, and while it fits with broader trends towards pre-emptive and risk-driven responses, there is a notable absence of research on the operation, and impact, of confiscation legislation, including: criminal turnover; the impact on legitimate transactions; efficiency costs; and the impact on crime or terrorism levels.
Our purpose is an exchange of views between academics, policymakers and practitioners. This symposium will consist of the following panels:

Location Details
School of Law, The Liberty Building, University of Leeds.
The Liberty Building is situated just off Moorland Road on the western campus of the University of Leeds. It is situated in the north-west corner behind the Business School.
From the rail station, it is a 20 minute walk, or catch a taxi or number 56 bus which stops on Moorland Rd and runs from Albion St/Woodhouse Lane/A660 every 10 minutes.
Leeds-Bradford Airport is about 25 minutes north-west by taxi via the A660.
If travelling by car, there is a visitors' car park at the south end of the University campus or four hour street parking on Belle Vue Road immediately behind the Liberty Building.
