Why come to Leeds?

Why come to Leeds?

Leeds is a prosperous, commercial, industrial and manufacturing city. It is "an old city with a young outlook". In the City Centre, modern offices sit alongside fine old buildings like the Town Hall and the Corn Exchange, and impressive new shopping precincts complement traditional Victorian arcades.

The city has a blossoming cafe culture and a thriving nightlife. Leeds is also a green city, proud of its parks and open spaces.

Leeds also has a wide range of different leisure facilities.

There are lively audiences for all kinds of films, concerts and plays. There is a thriving local music scene, including the world famous Leeds International Pianoforte Competition and the Grand Theatre, the home of Opera North.

The West Yorkshire Playhouse is home to one of the leading provincial theatre companies. Leeds City Art Gallery offers a wide variety of exhibitions and also houses the new, internationally famous Henry Moore Centre for the Study of Sculpture.

If you are an active sportsperson, you will find many sporting facilities both in the University and the City. For the spectator, Headingley is the home of Yorkshire County Cricket Club and Leeds Rugby League Club, and Leeds United play at Elland Road.

The Yorkshire region around Leeds is easily accessible by road and rail, with excellent links to London, Manchester and Scotland. Within easy reach of Leeds are many areas of outstanding natural beauty: the Yorkshire Dales and the Pennines, the North York Moors and the Vale of York.

The ancient city of York is only 30 minutes away.
